| General Appearance: The American Pit Bull Terrier a muscular and powerful dog that is extremely athletic. It is a solidly built medium-sized dog. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) has a short, smooth coat that defines it's muscles perfectly. The body of the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is just slightly longer than it is tall, but bitches may be somewhat longer in body than dogs. The length of the front leg (measured from point of elbow to the ground) is approximately equal to one-half of the dog's height at the withers. The American Pit Bull Terrier's (APBT's) broad flat head is of medium length with a wide, deep muzzle. Ears are small to medium in size, high set, and may be natural or cropped. The dog's relatively short tail is set low, thick at the base and tapers to a point. The tail should resemble a pump handle when the dog is relaxed. |

They are extremely protective dogs and will do what it takes to protect their family at any cost. These dogs are extremely devoted and loyal to their families. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is great with children, if raised with them, and will quickly become the child's protector and guardian. However this dog should not be left alone with unfamiliar children because they may be seen as a threat to the dog's family or as it's prey. The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is not recommended for first time dog owners. This dog breed requires a dominant owner and handler. The dog must know that his master is the one in charge. |

| Brief History: The American Pit Bull Terrier's (APBT'S) ancestors were brought to the United States in the mid 1800's by Boston-Irish immigrants. Originally bred from a variety of bulldogs and terriers, American breeders increased their weight and gave them a bigger head. A forbearer to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Amstaff), they were originally bred to fight other dogs and to participate in an event called bull baiting. Bull baiting was banned in England in 1835. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a victim of the press. If bred and raised correctly, it can be one of the most loving and loyal of the dog breeds. Yet there are some complications in registering this breed. The AKC considers the American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff) as separate and distinct from the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT), yet the UKC will register both as American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs). |
